Small in size but very varied, Belgium is easy to explore by motorhome: in a few hours on the road, you go from the beaches of the North Sea to the forests of the Ardennes, passing through art cities like Bruges, Ghent or Namur. Here are our tips to make the most of it, alone or as a pair.
The most beautiful regions to discover
- The Belgian Ardennes: Bouillon and its castle, Durbuy, La Roche-en-Ardenne, the Semois valley. Winding roads, forests and rivers: it is motorhome travellers' favourite region.
- The Meuse valley: Dinant, Namur and its citadel, the abbeys of Maredsous and Leffe.
- The Belgian coast: nearly 70 km of beaches from De Panne to Knokke, linked by the coast tram, handy for leaving the motorhome parked.
- The Flemish cities: Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Mechelen. It is better to park on the outskirts and reach the centre by bike or public transport.
- The High Fens and the East Cantons: wide open spaces, hiking and the spa town of Spa.
Good to know before you go
- Low emission zones (LEZ): Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent have low emission zones that are always active. Vehicles registered abroad generally have to be registered free of charge before entering, and access depends on the vehicle's Euro standard. Check the up-to-date rules on each city's official website before your visit.
- Overnight parking: it is regulated by the municipalities. Favour motorhome service areas and campsites, which are numerous in the Ardennes and on the coast, and respect the signs.
- Languages: French in Wallonia and Brussels, Dutch in Flanders, German in the East Cantons. Road signs change language depending on the region (Liege = Luik, Mons = Bergen).
- Short distances: the country is about 300 km at its longest, ideal for a long weekend or a first experience of travelling as a pair.
